Concept
Life is a live audiovisual performance built around a modified version of Conway's Game of Life. Developed using Python, TouchDesigner and RAVE machine learning models, the work transforms a simple cellular automata simulation into a performable audiovisual system.
Rather than treating the simulation as a fixed composition, we approach it as a living organism whose behaviour unfolds in real time. During the performance, we manipulate the rules governing the system, influencing growth, decay, and evolution through a MIDI controller. While these interventions shape the conditions of the simulation, they never fully determine its outcome.
The project explores the tension between authorship and emergence, asking what it means to perform with systems that can surprise their creators. Each performance becomes a negotiation between human intention, machine learning, and computational behaviour, where visuals and sound continuously evolve in response to the state of the organism.
